Mr. Smith has been working professionally for the past 40 years both as a lighting designer for the stage and as a consultant for numerous theater projects, lighting concerts, dance, musicals and opera. He lit Andrea Bocceli’s U.S. premier opera performance and has worked with Luciana Pavarotti, Denyce Graves and Ruth Ann Swenson. As the Resident Lighting Designer for Michigan Opera since 1989 he has lit over 75 productions. Regional Opera companies include Florida Grand Opera, Virginia Opera, San Diego Opera, Fort Worth Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. He has assisted on Broadway with Tharon Musser and Marilyn Rennagel along with lighting many Off-Broadway productions. His work has been seen at many regional theaters including Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company and North Shore Music Theatre.
As a consultant he has worked with Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, Massachusetts redesigning the lighting system for a 300 seat thrust theater. His design work at Merrimack also earned him the Paul Tsongas Arts Achievement award. His next major project was his involvement with Michigan Opera Theater’s renovation of the Detroit Opera House, a 2800 seat theater restored to circa 1925. He also served as a consultant for Florida Grand Opera at the newly designed Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, advising them on lighting requirements, system and equipment selections. Currently he is consulting on the historic Sunset Center and Forest Theater in Carmel, California.
